Why Rome?
Let's meet in a historic city for our first ever TWiki community conference!

We have more community members in Europe than in other regions of the world, so Rome is a logical place. This is a community driven event by/for the community. Let's make this as inexpensve as possible for all participants. Rome is very accessible, and there are cheap flights.
TWIKI.NET is a corporate sponsor, helping organize the event and sponsoring the conference logistics, lunch and dinner.
Place and Date
- Please read Logistics below and contact Barbara Ricci at the hotel by July 12 to get one of the 12 blocked rooms, else you can book your own hote room elsewhere in Rome.
- Date: Thu 2007-08-16 and Fri 2007-08-17
- Breakfast will start at 7:30 AM
- Meetings will start at 9 AM and continue through the evening with lunch and dinners covered by a sponsor
Please reserve the date and make travel arrangements early!
Who really needs to come?
Anyone from the TWiki community is welcome; but if you use TWiki to enable your business, or to enable your clients' business, or just to help organise your life, you really need to be there! Here are some of the reasons you should consider coming:
- Steer TWiki in the direction you want it to go!
- Assess whether TWiki meets your needs for a long term solution for your business!
- Meet the developers. Brainstorm your ideas with people who know the architecture and code inside out!
- Get help in working out the best way for you to contribute!
- Expand your horizons by visiting one of the greatest capitals in Europe!
Logistics
We have booked a meeting room in the heart of ancient Rome at the attractive and well located Hotel Adriano. The meeting room can handle 10 to 20 people.
The hotel is within a few blocks of the Pantheon in the middle of the ancient city. To learn more about the hotel and environs please see: www.hoteladriano.com
We have been able to set aside a block of rooms at a reduced rate only until July 12 for those who would like to stay at the hotel.
Double rooms / single use Superior
¤155,00 per night, buffet breakfast, taxes and Vat included. (this is approx $200 per night)
This is a very good rate for a high quality hotel in the heart of Rome. If the cost is too high for some, it is also possible to get rooms with two single beds for a similar rate, although those rooms are fairly small.
12 rooms are reserved until July 12 for TWiki community members.
If you would like one of these rooms, please contact the hotel directly and reference company HARLEQUIN MONDADORI, which negotiated the reduced rates for us. You will need to provide your personal credit card number to reserve and pay for the room.
As our meetings will be on Thursday and Friday, August 16 and 17, we recommend checking in on Wednesday August 15 and checking out on Friday the 17th, unless you would like to stay for the weekend. Our room lock is for the Wednesday and Thursday evening, the weekend rates may be different, if available.
To reserve a room, please contact:

How fixed is the date? I just looked at my calendar and have seen that we are on vacation that week.
--
MichaelDaum - 22 Jun 2007
Bummer, I don't think we can shift the date. The week after is school start in the Silicon Valley, the week before I am in Beijing. We could possibly shift it within that week, but last two days of week are good, so that people can do some sightseening over the weekend.
--
PeterThoeny - 23 Jun 2007
We are on a family holiday at those dates. We are currently looking if we can divert our plans to Italy.
--
ArthurClemens - 24 Jun 2007
BTW it will be "terribly hot" ... and with all shops closed for vacations, nobody around (like a "day after") ... probably it's the absolutely worst moment to be to Rome.
On the bright side ... there will be not so many crazy italian drivers around ...

It's really hard to escape from the heat in Rome, too. Nice (France) might be really nice as an alternative:
- Cheaper to get to for most north europeans
- ColasNahaboo and MichelBuffa would probably show up
- Beaches, great food, good mountain biking

How many people have to say "yes" to let the event take place?
--
CarloSchulz - 02 Jul 2007
The event is taking place, as of today we have 8 yes or tentatively yes. I already booked my flight to Rome.
"By August, the temperature during the heat of the day often exceeds 32° C (90° F); traditionally, many businesses would close during August, and Romans would abandon the city for holiday resorts, but this trend is weakening, and the city is increasingly remaining fully functional during the whole summer, in response to growing tourism as well as change in the population's work habits." From
Wikipedia:Rome
On IRC, Crawford suggested to go to a town nearby Rome, such as Tivoli or Frascati.

I am very sorry, Peter, but I won't be able to come on this date. Please, let's prepair such an important
meeting at least half a year in advance or even more. We could try to organize a
TWikiConference
with talks, demos and papers on a yearly base, thus attracting sponsors etc. But that really needs more
planning ahead.
--
MichaelDaum - 03 Jul 2007
Point well taken. This is our first summit, kind of an ad-hoc start. Yes, lets plan ahead for the 2008 event.
--
PeterThoeny - 03 Jul 2007
How about a series of small events, distributed in different centers which lead up to a bigger event next year?
--
AdamHyde - 03 Jul 2007
Hm, I agree with Michael, this should have planned way ahead.
I can't come since I'm blowing off my budget on other things already.
--
KwangErnLiew - 04 Jul 2007
anyone for a meet up in amsterdam?
--
AdamHyde - 06 Jul 2007
sounds good
--
CarloSchulz - 06 Jul 2007
ok then, why not have one the same week as rome? that way these could be 'modular' events, sorta linking into each other?
--
AdamHyde - 07 Jul 2007
nah, that's too much (at least for me). If I'm goint to Rome already I don't have time and money to go to a second TWiki event in the very same week.
--
CarloSchulz - 09 Jul 2007
Looks like this meeting is about to go down the toilet because people that first said they would go are backing out. I just reserved the hotel yesterday and I am about to book the flight and it is my own private money. I must say that I am getting pretty disappointed that people first say yes and then back out again.
--
KennethLavrsen - 12 Jul 2007
So what's happening now? Not many people left...
--
CarloSchulz - 12 Jul 2007
I also find it unfortunate that some people are backing out. The summit will happen in any case. I booked my flight and hotel already. I will find out if we get some sponsorship for hotel for one or two contributors from a sponsor. Please contact me via e-mail if the hotel fee is too expensive.
--
PeterThoeny - 12 Jul 2007
Good to see that Crawford is coming in the end. I'll try to come up with a definitive answer ASAP.
--
StephaneLenclud - 13 Jul 2007
We are really trying our best to finish our holidays in Rome.
--
ArthurClemens - 13 Jul 2007
I'm very happy to see that this event is actually happening, against all odds with a very short notice!
I hope for next time it will be possibly to have an "agenda first"-approach - I'm sure that having agenda items up front in the style of "project experiences with TWiki", "best practices with TWiki" - perhaps along the lines of Arthurs excellent
TWikiSuccessStoryOfLostBoys - would do great in attracting the customer advocates we need so badly (imho).
--
SteffenPoulsen - 13 Jul 2007
I'm possibly bringing my partner. He's not into perl hacking and stuff, but he might sit in on some sessions if we're going to talk about usability (he comes from a psychology background). My question is: can he sit in at the dinners??
--
KoenMartens - 01 Aug 2007
Will there be scope for new faces? I may have the chance to tag along for one or both day.
--
EmanueleCupido - 06 Aug 2007
Sure, drop by if possible
