Who am I?
I've been admin'ing
http://docs.indymedia.org
TWiki (>11000 topics) for two years, and another (private) TWiki for one year.
I've been reading twiki-dev mailing list for two years.
I wrote the
FundraisingPlugin, and have been maintaining the French translation since dakar early release candidates.
I already have
SVN write access to twikiplugins, in order to maintain my
FundraisingPlugin.
What do I want?
Write access to
SVN for the following directory:
MAIN/locale/
What can I do?
I want to maintain the French translation directly in
SVN, rather than doing the usual "svn diff + attach patch to
ItemXXXX)" process.
Why do I want to do it?
I heavily use
SVN/SVK (basically my /home directory is in
SVN), so the translation work would be
really easier for me if I could do it in a way that is properly integrated into my work habits : I could translate new/fuzzy strings as they appear, and avoid the pre-release hundreds-strings-translation rush...

Ben, definatly - I'll enable your
TWikiPlugins access next time i log into the server. I've just had a quick look at the
IndyMedia site, and would like to know more about your huge amount of success with localising your TWiki, and if you could help us out wrt the localisation efforts going on the the
DevelopBranch, and the
DakarRelease. right now we are working on localising the templates, but I see you've gotten alot of localised topics too. how do you manage to keep the localised contributions in sync?

When we want one of our main pages to be translated, we :
- stabilize it, first
- add a request to http://translations.indymedia.org
Then someone translates it. Great.
But... the localised contributions are not really kept in sync. We lack long term experience about this, since it's a pretty new setup : we've had the main pages translated only 6 months ago.
I've already thought of bringing our localised topics into TWiki, but... these are not really "official topics" translations, more often "custom documentation" translation. That's why they're not suitable for inclusion in upstream TWiki :/
One more detail on this topic : we've made some synthetized and easy documentation topics, that we'll soon add to our WebLeftBar and of course publish them on
http://twiki.org
; they're available on
http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Help
.
Last (and least) : since our users speak tons of different languages, we're
really interrested in full UTF-8 support (the last 2 parts of
ProposedUTF8SupportForI18N). We'd be able to help test stuff, for example by setting up a TWiki running with UTF-8 locale. Hope someone will be in a position to code it

Ben updated above profile and is asking now for write access to the main repository in order to work directly on the French translation. I fully support this. Please chime in with your opinions.
