• Pittsburgh defeats Minnesota in Superbowl IX.

• South Vietnam's President Thieu resigns, marking the end of the Vietnam War.

• The U.S. and the Soviets meet in space.

• Jimmy Hoffa disappears.

• "The Wiz" opens on Broadway.

• Watergate prison sentences begin. Former Attorney General John Mitchell, H.R. Haldeman, John Erlichman, and Robert Mardian will all serve time in prison.
