Question

Hi Folks:

I recently tried to upgrade from TWiki 4.2 to 4.2.3 using a non-root account (I'm using an account hosted at phpwebhosting.com). I was hoping the instructions provided would apply to me: "Most people will be able to copy these files on top of a running 4.2.0 or 4.2.1". But alas, I'm having the following problems:

1. None of my own Webs appear (just TWiki, Main, and Sandbox). When I try to type the Web directly into the URL I get the following message:

"Access Denied - Access check on Private.WebHome failed. Action "VIEW": access not allowed on web."

2. When I try an edit a topic (in the Sandbox and everywhere else) using the WYSIWYG editor I get the following error:

"There was a problem retrieving the page: OK"

3. TWikiAdminGroup appears to have been overridden and it was necessary to edit this manually to reinstate myself as a member of TWikiAdminGroup. This seems to be ok now.

I did regenerate the lib/LocalSite.cfg as the instructions recommended, but I didn't mess with anything else. In particular, I didn't touch any of the .htaccess files which I rely on to secure the site (it took a lot of trial-and-error to get it going last time and I'm afraid to mess with them).

Any recommendations to help me view my Webs and edit my topics???

Thanks!

Ted.

Answer

ALERT! If you answer a question - or have a question you asked answered by someone - please remember to edit the page and set the status to answered. The status is in a drop-down list below the edit box.

You can use de admin login with the password declared in twiki/bin/configure script. That should give you access to all pages to make all the fixings. If the problem persist then try to check file permissions.

Thanks Enrique - you were right, it turned out to be a permission problem. I have the TWiki pub sub-directory in a www directory that is in a different part of the tree to the cgi-bin twiki. I extracted the tar patch directly in the cgi-bin directory but then, without thinking, copied an unzipped version of the pub directory from my Windows machine to the www directory. Using the unzipped version left me with a permissions mismatch.

I really appreciated the help. It turned out to be a simple answer, but I was at a total loss as where to begin. And I really didn't want to go hacking into the .htaccess files again (that's got me into a lot of trouble).

Looks like I spoke too soon. I can now view all of my Webs, but when I try and edit them I get the message: "There was a problem retrieving the page: OK". Might this have something to do with the fact that my pub directory is in a different part of the directory structure than the cgi-bin/twiki?

I dont think so.The pub directory only have the attachments. Even when it is missing the attachement will be shown in the page but when clicked then comes the error.

By the way I am still in TWiki 4.2.0. I see too many bugs around, I think it is better to wait until they are solved. If you want to test is ok (after all thanks to testers the problems will be solved) but if it is a production server it is better to stay safe for a while.

I've just gone through checking all of the setup files: LocalSite, LocalLib, and .htaccess (in the twiki, pub, bin, and sub-directories). Everything looks fine, or at least nothing has changed from when TWiki 4.2.0 was working. I needed to upgrade to TWiki 4.2.3 because my installation suffered from the security bug that triggered the release of TWiki 4.2.3. I'm still at a loss as to why I can't edit topics.

I'm going to close this question as "Answered" and open a new question that focuses just on the problem of retrieving the page.
