TWiki Distribution Packaging How-to Discussion
refactored from TWikiAppPackageHowToDiscussion --TW
In
TWikiAppPackageHowToDiscussion,
PeterThoeny is thinking of TWiki as a basic technology on which application packages are layered. Consider turning this on it's head, and consider the problem of packaging TWiki such that it is tuned for a specific application (c.f. Bruce's blogging twiki). Perhaps this concept should be called a
TWikiDistribution - for example:
- PublicInternetTWiki - TWiki configured to work as public registration internet wiki platform, out of the box
- PrivateInternetTWiki - TWiki configured to work as a secure (SSL + sessions) internet wiki platform, out of the box
- TWikiForProjects - intranet twiki with action tracker & other tracking & productivity tools
- TWikiForExperimentalScientists - configured with data compression, bibliographies, latex/tex interfaces etc
- TWikiPIM (personal information manager)
- TWikiTIM (team information manager)
- TWikiForEngineeringKnowledgeBase - emphasis on long articles, text history, encyclopedia, clear site structure -- JosMaccabiani - 11 Apr 2005
- TWikiPersonalMirror - a mirror of one or more instances of one or more types of those listed above, to be used for a local knowledge / project base for fast access and fast editing. With provisions to mirror any local edits done (for designated sites) back to the source. (Some such sites would be private (not designated) and edits to those sites would not be propagated "upward".) Along with that, means for conflict resolution. -- RandyKramer - 12 Apr 2005
All of these would be TWiki, but packaged with all the pieces needed to address the specific application domain.

CrawfordCurrie has summed up the point I made on
GettingPaidToDevelopTWiki quite well Now what I think we need to do is populate those topics with a discussion about what plugins add-ons and other customizations should be included in each
TWikiDistribution then list each of those in the
TWikiDistribution topic in a nice table. BTW should this be in the Plugins or Codev web?

(Note for anyone reading this; this was
TravisBarker's idea, not mine; I just missed his original post and ended up duplicating the concept. All credit to Travis --
