• User configuration of what is displayed (the short identifier or a '#')
  • Tim Bray provides an example using '#' instead of the identifier.
• Uniqueness at the site level would allow PurpleNumbers to work correctly when the INCLUDE macro is used.

Although I agree that something like PurpleNumbers is good - ideally we should be able to identify an individual element (umm, I didn't mean element as in XML), character, etc., or set of elements. But I think that it is also necessary to have TransparencyInIdentifiers.
