There seems to be a trend where companies are moving towards open source solutions. Some move from Windows servers to Linux. Good server applications are key. MS-Exchange Server is used widely. What kind of alternatives are there for that product? SuSE's Open Exchange is a relatively inexpensive commercial package. What about open source? I do not see a single package but a combination of packages. For example:

  • MTA: postfix
  • File sharing: Samba
  • Directory service: OpenLDAP
  • List manager: GNU Mailman
  • Calendaring & To-do lists: ?

TWiki + CalendarPlugin + some glue could fit the Calendaring & To-do lists part. The CalendarPlugin would need to be extended quiet a bit. Calendaring and to-do lists would need to be driven by e-mail.

Is this idea too crazy? Opinions?

There already open source groupware solutions:

  • PHPGroupware includes calendar, to-do, mail reader, wiki etc
  • EGroupware a fork of PHPGroupware
  • TUTOS "The Ultimate Team Organization Software"

..etc, just search sourceforge and freshmeat wink

I think it is not feasible to reinvent the wheel. I suggest integration of TWiki to other platforms (or vice versa), eg TWiki could be integrated to PHPGroupware as an application. Yes, there is wiki, but I like TWiki better.

Chandler is an open source project seeking to fill this gap. It'sa big project. They have real funding and full-time staff(!). They are using TWiki in the interim. http://www.osafoundation.org/
