It's really irritating that a number of obviously generic "variables" are only available when entered into
.tmpl files. This makes the documentation more complex than it needs to be, and the code as well, and blows the developers mind when they find that they should be able to do something really simple, but can't.
This is a plea that all generic variables are made equal and expanded in topics as well as templates. Here's a sample set that really should be more generic:

Agreed, this inconsistency bugs me too. This is related to
SimplifyInternalMetaDataHandling; all variable handling should be done in one place.
