/etc/skel: Systemwide directory where "skeleton" files are kept. A skeleton file is sort of a prototype file that is copied into appropriate directories for each user (and possibly modified). At least, that's what I thought it was -- /etc/skel is empty on my (possibly misinstalled) Mandrake 8.1 system, and has a bunch of .kdelnk files on my Mandrake 7.2 system.
