SID-00530: Integrating Powerpoint files in TWiki

Status: Answered Answered TWiki version: 4.3.1 Perl version: 5.8.8

Hi to all,

We have huge amount of Powerpoint files in our organisation that we are planning to integrate it with TWiki. So, to create each slide a GIF file and then make a set of it and attach it in a TWiki topic might be good for few files. But to convert large amount of files (PPT format) to TWiki will be a huge task by itself and also to maintain it is a big headache. Any method where we can convert PPT files to TWiki format??

We require to have PPT file in TWiki attached in the webpages. We do not want it to be attached where it can be downloadable by all. We want it static in the webpage.

Pls guide us. Let me know workaround for this to achieve.

Thanks

Discussion and Answer

According to the log of the last release meeting, Sopan has a pptx converter. Perhaps he can provide some more details?

The pptx converter does not help for this use case since the converter's output is plain text, needed for search indexing. There might be 3rd party tools to convert a ppt to a series of bitmaps. There are web-based solutions to convert ppt to Flash, such as http://www.slideshare.net/

In Microsoft Powerpoint the pps can be saved in a jpg format, saving every page in separated jpg files. Then zip everything, upload with BatchUploadPlugin and show it with ImageGalleryPlugin.

Just save, zip, upload and write %IMAGEGALLERY{} in the topic.

Cool! Thanks for sharing, Enrique.

Hi All,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts which helped me solve this situation.

I used OpenOffice Impress and imported the ppt into that. There is an option to convert it into Flash format (.swf). Its really cool. I could directly upload it into TWiki as attachement. Thats really great to proceed. smile

I will also try out what Enrique has explained. I will check which one suits best for my requirement and adopt the same.

Thanks once again to all.

I dont like too much flash because it requires to install plugins in the client side. Some clients just dont want to receive a lot of advertising for a really little useful content in the internet in flash format.

On the other hand the jpg approach will give you a static site. However animation plays a role in some powerpoints, meaning can be affected if it is removed, so some refactoring would be needed to keep the message.
