hierarchical: A family, with grandparents,
parents,
children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc., provides an example of a hierarchical relationship. See
family tree.
Many things in the computer world, including the filesystem, can be characterized as a hierarchy. There is one root of the filesystem, at the next level there are subdirectories, and other subdirectories below these, and so on. Files can exist at any level of the filesystem hierarchy (including the root).
