Question

Whenever I edit a page, the URL appends a t= or time= timestamp.

What is the purpose of that option, and would it cause any problems if I omitted it when entering the URL?

Situation: I'm using a topic page as a personal log. I expect to be updating it daily or even more frequently. I've got the topic bookmarked, but would love a bookmark that takes me directly to the edit page.

In other words, what's the difference between:

Answer

If you omit it, your browser might show you the content of an outdated topic version. The t parameter contains a timestamp which ensures that the edit URL is unique down to the second.

In other words, you can bookmark the edit URL without the timestamp or a fixed timestamp, but to be sure you'd need to go to the bookmark and reload the page each time.
