I first considered maybe CommentPlugin could be modified to use TWikiAjaxContrib if available. CommentPlugin already knows how to save to different topics and the output can be formatted flexibly.

Actually, all this takes is a plugin that checks regularly a topic for changes. Of course, this would be really inefficient, as page loads would increase tremendously.

Some other mechanism would be needed to save the logs in regular intervals only, and handle the chat independently from TWiki.
