TWiki translation process

This topic is about coordinating the translation process. For information on how to make translations to individual languages, see UserInterfaceLocalisation instead.

When

The translation process must be coordinated with the TWiki release managers. We need to reach some important dates:

  • String freeze: after this date, no strings are updated and the translators can work without fear that their work is going to be out of date because strings were changed in the code.
  • Deadline for checkin of translations: the latest moment in which translation updates can be checked in to the source tree.

Who

To ease the process of reaching translations, every translator must be listed in the header of the corresponding PO file, following the following format:

# Translators:
# TWiki:Main/AntonioTerceiro, 2005, 2006, 2007.
# TWiki:Main/CarlinhosCecconi, 2005, 2006, 2007.

The format is important because some scripts rely on it.

To obtain the translators e-mail addresses, you must either check their TWiki topic on TWiki.org or ask one of the admins for their e-mail addresses from TWiki.org's user database (in the case the address is not shown in the topic).

How

Not necessarily in this order:

Action How to
Check the health of translations tools/check_translations --raw
Update TWiki translation status on TWiki.org tools/check_translations --upload
Check who are the translators tools/check_translations --translators
Update translations from code tools/xgettext

Supporting material

template for the translation process announce

This is a suggestion of message text for announcing to translators that they can start to work. The best practice is to address the message to TWiki's development list (twiki-dev@listsPLEASENOSPAM.sourceforge.net), and to Bcc: all the translators so their addresses are not exposed.

Note the bold parts, they must be filled with release-specific information.

Dear TWiki translators (Bcc:'ed in this message),

First of all, thank you for your contributions to TWiki translating it native to your own languages!

We are approaching the release of TWiki 4.2, with several new exciting features and needed fixes. Now text strings are frozen, and it's time for you to update your translations.

The procedure for updating translations is documented at http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Codev/UserInterfaceLocalisation.

In short, you need to download the latest version of ${YOUR_LANGUAGE}.po from http://svn.twiki.org/svn/twiki/branches/TWikiRelease04x02 , translate the untranslated strings, review the fuzzy ones, and send the file back in one of the following ways (in order of preference):

Our time frame for finishing the translations is up to next Friday, September 14th. We got then 9 days to translate, which should be fairly enough to the job.

Note that it is possible that some strings are hard or don't make any sense when translating to some languages. In the case you find such a string, please get in touch so we can work on a solution. This will ease your translation work and will also help TWiki with better English writing.

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions. In special, if you need more time to be able to finish your translation, please let me know and I'll bug our release managers to get some more time (don't guaranteed, though :)).

Happy TWiking,
