Hmmm, OK, that works; but it's not very friendly. I guess there should be a caveat on the $pattern documentation that says it should be used with non-greedy patterns.

IMO this is a standard regex feature and does not need special documentation. People who are adventurous enough to use $pattern() need to be aware of greedy and non-greedy pattern matching anyway.

Caveat Emptor, eh? Perhaps, but I am reasonably experienced in RE's and their foibles, and it still caught me out. I guess I need to reclassify myself as a "stupid user" and leave it at that.
