Just a little brainstorming. We could create a skin with File Browser like navigation, shown as a sidebar.

Good idea! I'm hoping individual topics would be available on the tree?

It's looking good. I only don't like the edit box with the go, this should be made a sperate pop-up if possible...
I would vote against all topics to be available on tree:
- the tree would need be be rebuild every time .changes is updated
- the amount of possible topics could cause performance issues
If you would like such a thing, I think this would be more on an incidental base (thus not required with every page view), and could be made a seperate clickable option.

The
TigerSkinPlugin offers something very similar already. Topics to be displed are defined in WebMenu topic. Graphics aren't quite as pretty! We've also added an extra level (logical) of Webs.

Performance issues are annoying.

Well, since it's a "Feature Brainstorming" topic, maybe someday a user could have an option to download the index (list of all pages) to a temporary cache on his local machine (or a permanent cache, at the user's option).
Until then, the approach of working from a predefined list, like John suggests, would be a help.

As long as we're looking a making a break from pure
HTML, I strongly recommend that we examine the principles expressed of the book
"The Humane Interface: New Directions for Designing Interactive Systems"
see
AlternativeNavigationMethods
The problem with the tree is that whatever window you put it in, something gets hidden, forcing extra panning, scrolling, and hovering to see the rest of the text.
It would also be nice if something
like the tree opened up not only to the Topic/Page level, but also to the Paragraph and Table-Cell level.

Rather than having topics on the tree we could have this tree displayed for files, non-twiki files,
that could be manipulated via a type of file manager. So that a tree of files would be displayed
in a
FileManager or
FileSystem topic.

I know there hasn't been any discussion here for a year, but I think this is good idea, but instead of having it dynamically build using the Perl scripts maybe we coule use the
PublishAddon plugin that generates flat
HTML files on a semi-regular basis for this menu that could be updated with a cron task.
