A Work Party is one of the scheduled CFK events at which volunteers do any or all of the following:
- Pick up computers from a donor and deliver them to a designated CFK location (or the LCTA???).
- Receive computers delivered by donors.
- Clean and perform initial testing of donated computers.
- Computers that are found defective are "parted out" to preserve good parts to use in other partially defective computers.
- Defective and excess parts are stored to avoid creating a hazard until they are sold as junk (after a minimum of 1000 pounds is accumulated).
- Prepare computers for distribution including the following:
- the hard disk is reconfigured and formatted
- a new operating system is installed (Vector Linux for Kids)
- it is combined with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to comprise a system
- it is logged into the CFK asset management system and assigned an asset number
- it is tested as a system shortly before distribution (ideally, the recipient will see the system operating before shutting it down for distribution)
- when supplies allow, computers with CD-Rom drives and modems (later, after working out installation and other details) will be distributed
