Even though I have my email server on Linux working, there are still some things to be done:
Ongoing:
- Continue to refine the filters in the .procmailrc (and rc.testing) files, under both dad and rhkmail
One time:
- Finish documenting the email server
- Among other things, collect and save a copy of all configuration files, .procmailrc and rc.testing for dad and rhkmail, .fetchmailrc for dad, ipr_getmail.scr, the main.cf file for postfix, /etc/xinetd.d/pop3, imap, postfix ?), ...
- Add cron job(s) to rotate the log once a week (?) (or use logger to write log data to standard system logs)
- Add cron job to restore write permissions on /var/spool/mail/ruth regularly (seem to disappear on a Sunday morning)
- Add cron jobs to System5 and System8 to synchronize clocks to somewhere
- Document the standard cron jobs I want on all systems (like synching the clock)
- Reduce verbosity of procmail logging and debug messages
- Modify System8 so postfix starts automatically after a reboot -- will have to "refresh my memory" on how to do that.
- Make some procedure checklists (or scripts) to deal with things like rebooting the email server, etc. (Did I need to do anything before I realized I needed to restart postfix?) -- One useful thing to do could be a script to open up rc.testing for dad and rhkmail in nedit (for rhkmail I must su to root if X is running as dad, or I must find a workaround) _Aside: Euan (on the basiclinux@basiclinuxPLEASENOSPAM.net list) suggested (on an unrelated thread) "Solution: Log in to a virtual console and start another xserver thus: =startx -- :1=" which is a viable alternate to consider -- one thing I noticed is that I need the <ctrl><alt><Fn> "syntax" to switch from one xserver to another (instead of just <alt><Fn>).
