INTERNET EVENTS
- ARPANET became too big too manage so it splits into two networks - Milnet used by the Military, and "the new smaller ARPANET" to be used by civilians.
- An inter-network communication method was invented called Internet Protocol (IP) with the most popular being the Transmission Control Protocol for IP (TCP/IP). This is the standard we use today for the internet.
- At end of 1983 there were about 600 hosts/nodes.
CURRENT EVENTS
- Cabbage Patch kids are released.
- French scientist Dr. Luc Montagnier discovered HIV.
- Camcorders are introduced.
- Karen Carpenter dies of anorexia nervosa at the age of 32, February 4th.
- The final episode of M*A*S*H airs, advertising cost more than during the Super Bowl that year, and surpassing the record Dallas set for most viewers.
- Compact discs are first released.
- U.S Embassy is bombed in Beirut, killing 40 people.
- "Just Say No" is the new tool to combat growing drug use in the US.
- The Tylenol Murders happen in Chicago.
