Question

I am creating a new MyWeb (first of several similar webs) and don't know whether to setup custom templates in templates/MyWeb or use the skin approach like Caboteria. Any tips?

Answer

When you mean templates vs skins is it because you want different contents or different appearance in the webs you're making? Templates, as in WebTopicEditTemplate, would be handy for the default page contents, whereas skins are useful for more web-design'ish things like layout and navigation.

Try to explain your situation and your plans, that'll help to give you more tips.

I want a collection of webs that have the Same appearance (stylesheet-wise) and different contents (different navbars, maybe a few different topics but mostly different TEXT for similar topics).

After reading TWikiDocumentation, my impression is that a skin is a template (albeit with more options for use -- even view.tmpl defines a layout and navigation), so this may be my source of confusion. For example, what can a skin do that a template cannot, and vice versa?

You seem to suggest that templates be used for contents and skins for appearance. Do we say things like "templates should never include style sheets?" Maybe I need to use both templates and skins for my new web(s)...

Using your example, how is WebTopicEditTemplate divided into content + appearance? Doesn't it contain the whole shebang?
