Question

I have migrated three installations of TWiki 3 to TWiki 4 and have noticed a couple of problems with 2 of the three migrations but not the third. I am looking for help/ideas to help isolate the reason for the differences. Both of these problems are on two of the three and both problems are not on the third. The only think I can think of that might have been different from the normal upgrade procedure is that I believe I copied the upgraded installation on top the old installation for the one that is working correctly where as I believe I followed the instructions to move the old wiki out of the way and move the upgraded directories in place for the two that are not working. Here are the two problems I noted.

1. Revision control is not working when the Storage is configured to use RcsWrap. RCS is installed and working on the system. All three of the TWiki installs were using rcs for storage prior to the upgrade. On the two that don't work, no error messages are given but the file history/revisions are not stored in rcs. If I issue the commands that would have been used to check in the files from the command line, the rcs commands work correctly and the new version appears in the wiki. If I change the one that is not working to use RcsLite for storage, the version control does work correctly. However I would like to go back to using RcsWrap as it is slower especially when access the full page history of often changed pages. I have looked in the twiki and apache log files and nothing in there gives me a clue to what the problem may be.
2. The default skin (Pattern Skin) has a different look and extra features on one installation. The one installation has 3D shaded buttons where the other two have simple grey buttons for save, quite save, etc. when in edit mode. The second difference is that the one with the shaded buttons in edit mode also has buttons for increasing or decreasing the size of the edit window as well a changing the font style. I have reinstalled the Pattern Skin but the lack of functionality/difference still remains.

Suggestions for troubleshooting this problem or solutions are greatly appreciated.

Answer

I took one of the installations and reapplied the 'patch' for 4.0 -> 4.01 -> 4.02 and the pattern skin issue is now resolved.

Ah, yes, sorry, missed that one (bugger!). INSTALL.html in root of distribution has some notes on typical issues with RCS, and else 4.0.3 (soon-to-be-released) has an improved behaviour on this issue.

On one of my two servers that were having RCS problems, this also went away when I reapplied the 4.0.1 and 4.0.2.
