So one of my twiki's (the only one working so far) is the personal twiki for windows.
Codev.TWikiForWindowsPersonal
Because it is a personal twiki I want to be able to link to arbitrary places on my file system. The purpose of the twiki is to help me organize information on my computer.
On one of my pages I type the follow:
[[file:///C:/Documents and Settings/John%20Creighton/My Documents/APEGGA/Performance%20Reviews/][C:\Documents and Settings\John Creighton\My Documents\APEGGA\Performance Reviews]]
The twiki creates the link. If I right click and paste this into another browser tab then it will open up the directory like it is an ftp site. However, if I click on the link nothing happens. I am running the twiki in firefox on windows. Does anyone know how I might be able to activate the link?

Discussion and Answer
Firefox's security model is preventing that. See
IE7AndExternalLinks for more information.
P.S. APEGGA eh? I was a member since the late 80's, but I let it lapse a couple of years ago.

I tried installing one of the firefox plugins and I don't think it worked. As for APEGGA, I've been working in Alberta for three years in the Instrumentation department of an EPC company. I studied electrical engineering as one of my undergraduate degrees, and completed the course work for a masters specializing in control systems.

Depending on the plugin, you may have to tell Firefox to use the Internet Explorer engine to render that site.

I used this plugin:
http://locallink.mozdev.org/installation.html
After reading further it appears I have to set up a handler in firefox to tell firefox to use this application when the url starts with file. Here is some info on firefox handlers:

I wonder what other cool things I can do with handlers, like tell fire fox to go to gmail on a mailto or perhaps have a rss twiki feed handler which post the rss feed item to my twiki if I click on the link which starts with the handler.
