Question

Is is possible to let TWIKI create typical XHTML output? Currently TWIKI seems to convert new lines to <p /> elements which is bad. One reason is, that this simply is not valid XHTML. Also, why is this also applied to the template code? It is not really useful to force developers to omit new lines in the TWiki templates.

Environment

TWiki version: TWikiRelease04x00x02
TWiki plugins: DefaultPlugin, EmptyPlugin, InterwikiPlugin
Server OS: Debian
Web server: Apache
Perl version: 5.8.8
Client OS: Windows XP SP2
Web Browser: Mozilla Firefox 1.5
Categories: Deployment, Browser Issue

ALERT! If you answer a question - or someone answered one of your questions - please remember to edit the page and set the status to answered. The status selector is below the edit box.

Based on the TWiki markup language and how the current TML -> HTML generator works, it would be quite challenging to change the output of the paragraph tags in a compatible way.

<p /> is proper XHTML and validates at http://validator.w3.org/

Nevertheless it would be nice to have <p>=proper paragraphs=</p> in order to control paragraphs consistently with style sheets.

Yes, it is basically XHTML, but the content between the <p /> is not directly allowed there. Also it isn't semantically correct. Are there any plans in this direction to add this feature to some of the next releases?

Feel free to start out by reporting it as a bug in our bug tracker (Bugs:WebHome).
