root partition: (See filesystems, partitions, and directories). The root partition (or directory) is denoted by / and is the "parent" directory for an entire Linux (file)system -- all other directories (or partitions) are subdirectories of the root directory.

You are reminded of this every time the complete path to a directory is displayed -- for example, in /home/user01, the leading slash represents the root directory (or partition).
