parent: Many things in the computer world are conveniently set up and characterized as a
hierarchical relationship, including, for example, the filesystem. In such a hierarchical relationship, it is a convenient analogy to think and talk in terms of parents and
children. The root directory is the parent of the first level subdirectories, those subdirectories are children of the root. Those children in turn are parents to the subdirectories at the next level under them. And so on.
