Apparently, kmail needs dcop in order to run, and, AFAICT, no window managers / desktops except KDE run dcop. (Maybe dcop can be run in those others??)
The reason this comes up is that I've used the kde desktop almost always since I switched to Linux. Recently, I (again) tried some alternate desktops which might be faster and with a smaller footprint than kde. Kmail did not work in any that I tried, and, since kmail is my current email client, I guess I won't switch desktops / window managers in the near future.
