CDDB: An Internet accessible database of audio CD information that includes things like the titles of CD albums and tracks, the artists, and similar. With appropriate software (or hardware) (and an Internet connection), a CD player can read information from this database to display the artist and title while a CD is being played.

There was (is?) some controversy regarding CDDB (or an alternative to it -- one of them started as a free service, collected a lot of information entered by "users" and then turned around and tried to sell the service (program and data). Not sure of the current status.

I think freedb.org is the new organization that has come along to replace CDDB, and remains free (LGPL'd).
