I have set: {mailProgram} to /usr/sbin/sendmail (in Debian this is reverted to exim4). I have tested exim4 from the command line: it works OK. {SMTP}{MAILHOST} is empty {SMPT}{SENDERHOST} is empty {SMPT}{Username} is empty {SMPT}{Password} is empty
When a new user registers the following error shows up in the browser (other notifications do not work either. Nothing about that in the log file).

Discussion and Answer
In
{MailProgram}
try
/usr/sbin/sendmail -t -oi -oeq

Alternatively, in {SMTP}{MAILHOST} set "localhost" or your actual mail server. Make sure Net::SMTP is installed.

That worked. Thanks!
