Question

hi, I've installed twiki ver 4.1.2, I can start the twiki in my browser. Now I would create a new User. So I registered and I get the email with the activation code back. When I use the link or when I copy the code into the field on the webpage, I get the error :

TWiki detected an internal error - please check your TWiki logs and webserver logs for more information. RCS: failed to create file path-defaultpath-4.1.2path: Permission denied

The logs shows the same failure, the twiki config has one waring by smtp so that twiki will use sendmail, (thats ok), rcs is installed I think its a permission problem, but I don't know where I have not set it.

thanks for help regards joerg

Answer

ALERT! If you answer a question - or someone answered one of your questions - please remember to edit the page and set the status to answered. The status selector is below the edit box.

Permission denied is the error message.

So there is a good chance that this is also the answer to the problem.

You probably did not setup the right permissions for the twiki directory tree.

Did you follow the directions in the INSTALL.html? This points to SettingFileAccessRightsLinuxUnix

Did you try any chmod -R? I would like to find out what it is that is missing or not clear in the installation documentation. This error shows up almost daily from new installers and in 99% of the cases running the SettingFileAccessRightsLinuxUnix fixes everything.

The default access rights in the tgz are correct for Linux. But you need to change the owner to the apache server user. I have the feeling that installers do not follow the INSTALL.html but instead do their own chmod -R without knowing that this both set access rights for directories and files. The end result is often that Apache is not allowed to write files in the TWiki directory tree.

Joerg please describe what you did during the installation and how you followed the INSTALL.html. And if there is something I can do better with the INSTALL.html.

Hi thanks for your answer,

I've set the permission again and now I can register new User and so on. I think that I've overlook a permission setting by the first installation.

I thought the problem was by rcs and so I asked here. Your installation guide is very clearly arranged with all information which you need for the installation / first start. I used bye another twiki installation and no problems smile

Thanks for help and have a nice day best regards joerg
