Question

How do I check the Wiki for orphaned topics or sub-webs of topics? I've looked at all the site management tools and do not find that function.

"Orphans" are defined as topics that do not have a direct line of links leading from the main entrance to them.

Environment

TWiki version: TWikiRelease02Sep2004
TWiki plugins: DefaultPlugin, EmptyPlugin, InterwikiPlugin
Server OS: WinXP
Web server: Apache 1.3
Perl version: 5.8
Client OS: WinXP

Answer

ALERT! If you answer a question - or someone answered one of your questions - please remember to edit the page and set the status to answered. The status selector is below the edit box.

First, a couple of items.

  1. I am not sure what you mean by "sub-webs". Your version of TWiki does not support the concept of hierarchical webs, or sub-webs.
  2. TWiki topics do not maintain a "lineage" list - or list of links. Each topic only carries with it a pointer to its last known parent.

Take a look at this topic ChildOfHowToFindOrphans.

  1. Hierarchical webs Web/SubWeb/SubSubWeb are a new feature of Dakar release, due for release soon.
  2. See ListingAllUndefinedButUsedWikiWords

frown Maybe there will be something in Edinburgh or beyond.

How in the world did you guys ever get hierarchical webs past Crawford???

-- SteveRJones - 12 Oct 2005

I do not know about Crawford. It passed by me because it is optional and will be turned off by default in the DakarRelease. Personally I think hierarchical webs invite the creation of many webs which makes it more difficult to cross-link and find content (especially if you have a big TWiki).

sounds to me like you're throwing out the baby with the bathwater. this is not a problem with hierarchical webs, its a general problem with the way linking and searching is done. notably, TWiki is heavily limited by the flat file system per web store, and this is one of many core problems that we intend to work on.
