Question

This is a formatting question.

I've resorted to using entity codes to replace special characters that TWiki uses for formatting, such as * for asterisks and | for pipes (vertical bars).

Is there an easier way of doing this?

yep. In TWikiPreferences you should find 'Rendering Shortcuts Settings' of %BULLET% and %VBAR%
