Question

The Installation Guide mentions, that Workaround Scripts are available if an ISP does not allow cron to be used. Where can I find those?

I have no information as to the OS the ISP is running, only that he denies the right to edit Cron Jobs. Nt I guess it would be a UNIX-Server then.

The Wiki Version is that of 01 Feb 2003.

Answer

See Google:twiki+cron+geturl - this lets you run cron somewhere else with an Internet connection and use this to drive the WebStatistics script etc.

Sorry:

If I had another place to run cron I'd not ask wink I'd just run the twiki there wink I am looking (as the doc states) for a replacement.

I might also need a 'step by step' guide, as the provider does not seem willing to invest any thought in the matter.

Added signature above.

Ok, but maybe you have a place and don't realize it? (That's the kind of thing I would do ;-). Do you run a Linux box at home? Do you surf the Internet with it? Is there some time during the day when you are typically on line?

If so, set the cron job to activate at that time and send the necessary stuff to your TWiki to force the WebStatistics update. (Can't recall what this is, but I'm sure it's in the documentation.)

Or, simple create a batch file that you can run at your convenience when you are online.

But your question was "Where can I find those?" (Workaround Scripts) -- I suspect that RichardDonkin's Google search will work, in fact, I just tried it, and found (among a few other things):

http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/TWiki/TWikiSiteTools#Generating_Statistics_Manually_b

From that page:

Generating Statistics Manually by URL

  • The twiki/bin/statistics script can also be executed as a CGI script, just enter the URL in your browser. Examples:
    • Update current month for all webs:
      http://mydomain.com/twiki/bin/statistics
    • Update current month for Main web only:
      http://mydomain.com/twiki/bin/statistics/Main
    • Update January 2000 for Main web:
      http://mydomain.com/twiki/bin/statistics/Main?logdate=200001

And, I learned something myself, how to generate the statistics for a past month, which will be useful on the CFK and AbiWord TWikis, which don't have a cron job setup either.

Hmm, I wonder if you can use

http://mydomain.com/twiki/bin/statistics/?logdate=200001

to update all webs for a past date? I'll soon find out. wink No, that doesn't seem to work, updates the Main web only.

<refactored the remainder of this comment -- _I was using wrong URLs -- now have the right ones -- only open item (in my mind) is that I don't see how to update all the webs for a past month (except by doing each web individually) - rhk 10 Mar 2003_>

These URLS work:

  • LVCFK TWiki (CFK web): https://www.thelinuxlink.net/twiki/bin/statistics/CFK?logdate=200302 Note: Since this is on an https URL (does that imply SSL? (SSH?)), you may have to view another page on that site and "answering the challenge" (can't remember immediately, but there is some kind of prompt -- oh, wait, it's for a bad certificate) -- anyway, I need to try this on a differern machine (i.e., fresh browser session) and see if it works.

In case you do not have a server where you can install a cron job:

You could use any web site that offers a service to pull a web page in regular intervals, e.g. to point it once a day to to http://yourdomain.com/twiki/bin/statistics

Google:site+monitor+service has plenty of choices.
