Question

. I did some experimenting with the "parenting" thing yesterday and today for the first time. I assume that each topic is allowed to have only one parent? If so, why don't we change the label from "Parents:" to "Parent:".

Aside: I managed to get two parents on the topic I tested (GoogleSearchTipsCondensed), see UseSquareBracketSyntaxForParent.

Answer

A topic can only have one parent, however, there is the parent of the parent etc. So, in a wider sense there are parents.
