Question
This question seems to be similar to problems several other users have had, but I have not been able to find an answer that fits completely.
I have installed TWiki and it is all configured fine. Now I need to add a user and give that user admin control. If I fill in the register new user details it fails to register the new user because of "Too many failures sending mail" as it "Can\'t send mail using Net::SMTP. <webmaster@example.c...')".
So I have to change the address it is sending to something that is allowed? To do this I go to
WebPreferences and try to add the "Set WIKIWEBMASTER" variable but it won't allow me to do this. It gives me the following error if I click edit:
Attention
Access check on
WebPreferences failed. Action "change": access not allowed on topic.
Contact
webmaster@examplePLEASENOSPAM.com if you have any questions.
I obviously can't turn authentication on, as I haven't yet got a user.
I have been going in circles with this for over a week, please can someone shed some light on this for me?
Thanks.
P.s. interestingly the email sent when registering gets through fine, it is only TWiki that thinks it can't send it.

Answer
If you answer a question - or someone answered one of your questions - please remember to edit the page and set the status to answered. The status selector is below the edit box.
The mail error sounds like your mail subsystem is trying to verify the e-mail address used before sending, and failing on verifying the example.com address. So getting this altered into something meaningful is definetely a good idea.
Having this established, yes, there's a bit of catch 22 on enabling authentication that you need to break
You should follow the installation documentation very carefully when enabling authentication, but it sounds like you are ready to follow the 9 steps mentioned in your local
Main.TWikiAdminGroup
topic at present.

Thanks for your reply Steffen.
If I turn on the authentication for step 1 of
TwikiAdminGroup then I haven't a login with which to edit the admin group page. Similarly, I can't edit the email address for WIKIWEBMASTER without first having a user.
Indeed a double bind situation, except I hope I'm not crazy to attempt this - unlike Heller's Captain orr.
What am I missing?
Many thanks.

You should definetely register a normal user first
I'm wondering why you are not allowed to edit the
TWikiAdminGroup
topic and add your newle created user; the topic is not locked down as shipped.
You could try editing the topic directly on disk using
vi
or any editor directly, and add yourself as a user in this way.

right, i had to change my email server to pretend to recognise the example.com email address in order to get it to allow a new user to register.
now everything else is falling into place.
thanks for your help Steffen.
