Feature Proposal: Dealing with punctuation and font changes

Motivation

The current rules for handling punctuation that border a font change sometimes make for either stilted sentences or difficult rewording. Coming up with a way to allow punctuation to "cuddle" with alternate font sections is valuable.

Description and Documentation

Find a way to allow punctuation to "cuddle" with alternate font text.

Choices include:

  • fixing the regexp expressions to include different punctuation characters.
    • there are I18N issues here
    • there are backward-compatibility issues here
  • find a way to say 'just before rendering, eat whitespace around me'

Examples

It would be nice to be able to write things like:

  • pre-=progname=
  • =progname='s behavior
