When using the % INCLUDE% variable with a URL, should the return page be processed for TWiki syntax? E.G.: one page I included (http://sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/portmon.shtml) has the words:
How it Works: WinNT?
In the display of the included page WinNT is displayed as an undefined hyperlink. Is this right? I think that http/html data should be displayed directly without being molested. I think only raw twiki pages should be preprocessed.

I am putting it in as a bug report, but it really may be a feature request to allow a parameter processPage=off to be added to the INCLUDE variable if people think that is the way to go.

I can work around it on Dec2001 release by using <pre> &lt/pre; around the % INCLUDE%, but I still claim this looses on the principle of least surprise.

Maybe this trick (using pre) should be added to the documentation on % INCLUDE%??

You could try putting <noautolink> ... </noautolink> around the Include, but I think that still does TWiki formatting although not linking. There should probably be an option in Include, as you say.

The default behavior for

Warning: Can't find topic ""."" should definately NOT run the returned results through the TWiki processing. Only in unusual circumstances would you really want to process the returned data through TWiki's formatting, particularly since there is a fairly high overhead in running the TWiki regexps across a large document.

This is a controversial feature. At work we depend on the TWiki rendering where regression test scripts generate HTML / TWiki shorthand fragments that are included into TWiki pages for reporting. May be a new switch to turn off the rendering?

We use it also to include texts in TWiki shorthand. I'd vote for a new switch, too.

Peter, I think a switch to turn on TWiki processing would be less confusing. I doubt that many html pages produce TWiki markup. I assume that you use TWiki markup in your regression output because it was easier than having somebody produce the HTML to properly display the data.

Colas: What URL do you use to include twiki shorthand files? Do you have just regular URL's (i.e. not using the TWiki view script) that you maintain by hand? Are you looking at email that use TWiki markup?

URL to hand-made cgi scripts. If you have only to output TWiki markup, making a quick script becomes very easy, so you can provide a lot of functionality this way.

Besides, including HTML "as is" is not possible. The header tags (<html>, <head>, <style> will make the full page invalid... INCLUDE would have to parse the HTML, which is very difficult if you want to work with all the broken HTML there is on the web.

I haven't investigated this yet to see how/what is happening, but I attached a html page to a topic and included it in the topic (http://twiki.org/p/pub/Codev/IncludeWithFullURLShouldNotBeTwikiProcessed/somepage.html) and found the result was that any relative links within that included page were being made into invalid absolute links (to http://twiki.org/p/pub/Codev/IncludeWithFullURLShouldNotBeTwikiProcessed/#ref). This is not very useful. I'm doing this because the html doc is auto-generated release note info and the including topic is the release doco (which gets various info added to it by humans). I could modify this to produce twiki markup but that is actually harder than it sounds. I vote for a switch on include to disable the twiki processing.

I did try to put:

Here but it locked up trying to go to the preview - I guess that is a bug too? I didn't have the lockup problem at work (which is an alpha release from a while back - haven't updated yet) - is it related?
