Someone just mentioned they'd like to turn over their TWiki installation to their network management group, but the group wouldn't take it on until it could be shown that TWiki could be completely administrated from the web.

This got me to go look at the ManagingWebs topic and it's pretty apalling. Not only is it not complete ("See TWiki Installation Notes for creating a web"), but it's just chock full of nitty little manual details to do anything!

I think for the long-term viability of TWiki that this should and could be resolved with scripts! Possibly this new form stuff that seems to be taking shape.

Well, I agree that it contains manual steps. However, unless the goals of the project are agreed to include the idea of no manual steps in the administration it is just as easy to argue that the way it is completely achieves the project goals!

I do think this should be a goal. As I commented in UsingSkins ("At my installation I am pushing to hand over the whole server to our technology support division but they won't touch it until I can prove that I don't need shell access to it. I guess my company is not the only one that works that way.")

I think TWikiUnixInstaller will also help. I don't think there is an aim to have this in the August 1st release though.

Probably not at this stage - the code I've got at the moment is mainly aimed at the better DataAndCodeSeparation side of things, since my main aim at the moment is to produce a DistributedWiki. Currently our IT guys wouldn't support this with a bargepole, since it requires too much hands on administration, especially without the separation noted above. ("What you mean in order to back up individual webs owned by different groups I have to point at 3 different directories?", and similar stuff)

The code base I've got at the moment has drifted a bit too far from the CVS tree at the moment, so before anything I do can be rolled back out, I need to do a local down sync, before making an upsync available... So far I'm automating the process of installing a twiki such that only minor tweaks are required, and I'm working to eradicate those as well...
