Feature Proposal: SEARCH to have parameter "default"

Motivation

If search gets no hits, it would be nice to be able to display some default text as METASEARCH currently does with its "default" parameter.

Description and Documentation

The request is to have a parameter for the SEARCH routine such that if no hits are made with the search, a default text is displayed (Mainly useful for bookkeeping whether something has been done or not). METASEARCH does this already so why not SEARCH as well.

Examples

Say you were building a table that was to say whether a test passed or failed based on the most recent result, it would be nice to display this along with whether the test had ben preformed. For example you would search for results corresponding to this test and if it came up empty you would display "Not Yet Tested" or something. If it did find a result then you would take the pass or fail data and show that. METASEARCH has a "default" parameter that does this type of functionality and it seems SEARCH would be more useful with this as well.

Impact

WhatDoesItAffect: Search, Usability

Implementation

I haven't looked at the code yet, but I'm guessing it would be in the parameters section of SEARCH that just checked if anything was returned and if not the string given is returned.

Discussion

This looks like a useful enhancement. We should use the same parameter to be consistent, e.g. default="whatever".

Since this is a small & compatible enhancement it does not need to go through the release process. A working patch for code, unit tests and documentation helps in getting this feature accepted.

Since FreetownRelease is in code freeze this will need to be deferred to GeorgetownRelease.
